Finding fleeting glimpses of beauty.
Raleigh Mendez is a California-based photographer whose work explores the ocean from within it.
After years spent surfing the California coast, his relationship with the ocean evolved from simply riding waves to studying their shape, movement, light, and fleeting moments of order. Working from the water places Raleigh inside the environment he photographs, allowing him to create images from a perspective that exists for only a fraction of a second.
His work is less concerned with documenting surfing than with isolating moments that might otherwise disappear—a wall of water, reflected light, texture, movement, and the brief geometry of a breaking wave.
Each photograph is created with the intention of becoming a physical object. Selected images are produced as large-format works designed to bring the scale, energy, and atmosphere of the ocean into the spaces they inhabit.
Raleigh lives and works in Ventura, California.
